15.4286 weeks

The new one, it is kicking me today. Discipline! We need more discipline around here. I seem to think this one is a boy. I can only think of boy names, but we won't know until the end of June, and I guess not really until November. Dylan can't decide whether it's a brother or a sister. She has one friend who got a little brother as of Monday (CONGRATULATIONS, BUT I STILL DON'T KNOW HIS NAME YOU MUST TELL ME) and another friend who has ordered up a little sister in September, so she goes back and forth. I can't chat for long since I'm still on the up at 5am plan, this week on the always-uplifting gynecologic oncology service.

Dress Up: Harry Potter Edition

The gentleman on the left had to read all the names. He got a large round of applause after a particularly onerous one

I am just a blur because I move at the speed of sound

This is my hood, which was returned, along with the rest of the regalia, within a half hour of the ceremony. The whole getup was in my possession for less than 24 hours, for the small sum of $100. The hood tended to slip down when I sat, pinning my arms to my sides.

Graduation Trivia: The chairman of the board of trustees said May the Force Be With You at each of the EIGHT graduation ceremonies for different university groups that members of the board and such had to attend this weekend.

Dylan: likes graduation ceremonies because they are prone to random bursts of clapping, as is she.

Graduation: sort of fun, but also tedious and sort of anticlimactic when you are in the midst of an intense and exhausting rotation. On the plus side: I finished work at 7am yesterday and pretty much went right into attending graduation events, which helped me switch back from the dark side to a less nocturnal schedule. On the minus side: I nearly passed out on the table during an ultrasound yesterday because I am not actually that good at messing with my sleep schedule. But! Screening stuff is all negative so far and I will be at 14 weeks on Monday.

Skipping

I think I learned something about kids being able to skip when they're five. I don't know what they're talking about.

Dishing

Sorry, sorry, that was a bit of a tease. And the obvious conclusion to reach, that I had swiped an ultrasound printout from one of my patients, is not actually correct.

So, November 14th is the due date. We're looking to upstage Tommy's November 16th birthday by a day or two. We told Dylan today, but she was playing with a flashing red bouncy ball at the time, and who can compete with that? Not me and my weird "Sweetie, there's another child in my tummy," that's for sure.

I did feel a little more nauseous this time for a while, but guess what? If I eat all the time I feel okay. Done. I'm also tired, but I currently have to get up at 5am for my, yes, OB/GYN rotation. I have to work nights next week, so then I will really show you tired. Probably in the form of not posting. Also: it's better not to have seen anyone else in labor at all before you have a baby.

Snuffy is just thrilled, as discerned from his unchanging panting.

I dug out my maternity stuff, purchased in a time when I did not have to wear professional clothes to work. Luckily I have to wear scrubs for this month, so I can punt that one for now. As long as I was in the attic I noted that Dylan has had more clothing in her 2+ years than most people have in a lifetime. We have not generally purchased girly things, but if this one is a girl (TBA: late June) it will have some excellent options. Unless I work up to not actually caring about putting a boy in all those cool dresses, which: you never know.

I'm sure we'll set up a high-stakes baby pool at some point. Stay tuned.

Sneak Preview: November 2009

Hooverville

The air is thick with despair and whiskey.

The residents are a suspicious lot. They don't get outsiders 'round these parts much.

But. They put on a brave face for the (barefoot) media.

Soldier on, little buddy.

Word Problem

1) Aaron is in Baltimore presenting at a conference.

2) I arrive in the driveway alone in the car with: Snuffy, Dylan, perishables, chocolate, my computer, a thin layer of garbage, and various other household items.

3) It is hot.

4) Dylan needs to be put down for her nap an hour ago.

5) Snuffy's food has spilled in the trunk.

6) Snuffy needs to pee, and must not be left alone a) with the food or b) in the hot car.

7) It is also considered poor form to leave one's child strapped in alone in the stifling heat.

8) The cheese is melting.

9) The chocolate is melting.

10) I need to pee.

11) The fox already ate the chicken and is in the boat with the grain, so at least that's no problem.

What should I do first?

Hint: correct answers do not involve either myself or Snuffy and a diaper, nor do they include hyperthermia, ruined chocolate, or a psychotic break.

Recently

Today Dylan tried to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Yesterday Aaron tried to get me to hit the snooze button for him. It's just not right.

Two days ago we had a nutrition lecture. Did anyone grow up in an area without fluoridated water? Like Ithaca?

I had to raise my hand so everyone could laugh at me. We don't talk usually about that dark time.
